Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley
Your desert tour begins early in the morning as we depart from Marrakech, heading towards the stunning High Atlas Mountains. The drive across the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass, which sits at an altitude of 2,260 meters, offers incredible views of Berber villages and terraced fields carved into the mountains. Along the way, we’ll stop to admire the landscapes and for coffee or photos.
By midday, we reach the world-famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a spectacular mudbrick fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site. You’ll have time to explore the maze-like alleys and soak in the views of this centuries-old village that served as a backdrop for countless films and series like Game of Thrones and Gladiator. After lunch nearby, we continue to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa,” known for its film studios and desert scenery.
From here, the road winds through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing palm groves and ancient fortresses until we arrive in the Dades Valley. The scenery is dramatic with its red rock formations, traditional Berber homes, and famous “monkey fingers” cliffs. Dinner and overnight stay will be in a charming hotel or guesthouse overlooking the valley.
Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Merzouga – Desert Camp
After breakfast in the Dades Valley, we head deeper into the South through a route that reveals Morocco’s hidden gems. Our first stop is the Todra Gorges, a spectacular canyon with vertical cliffs reaching up to 300 meters high. Here, you’ll have time to walk along the riverbed, take photos, and enjoy the refreshing air of the gorge — a favorite among rock climbers and nature lovers.
We then continue through the desert towns of Tinjdad and Erfoud, known for their fossil workshops and traditional culture. Arriving in Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes, your desert adventure begins. You’ll meet your camel guide and set off across the golden dunes during the late afternoon, just in time to witness the stunning Sahara sunset.
After a peaceful camel trek, we arrive at the desert camp, where you’ll be welcomed with mint tea and traditional music by the fire. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner and relax under a sky full of stars. This is a magical night in the heart of the Sahara, offering comfort, warmth, and silence unlike anywhere else.
Day 3: Merzouga – Ouarzazate – Marrakech
Wake up early to catch the sunrise over the dunes — a moment of silence and wonder that captures the spirit of the desert. After breakfast at the camp, we ride the camels back to Merzouga village and begin our return journey to Marrakech, retracing the scenic landscapes we passed through.
As we drive north, we’ll take time to stop for breaks, lunch, and photos in small Berber villages and panoramic viewpoints along the way. We pass again through Ouarzazate, and if time allows, you can stop for a quick look at Taourirt Kasbah or the film studios.
In the late afternoon or early evening, we arrive back in Marrakech, where your 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour ends. This adventure offers a unique blend of nature, history, and Moroccan culture — making it one of the most rewarding short desert trips in Morocco.
